Do you work from photographs?
Yes. Because I work from the photos you provide me, it is important that they are clear, and represent the likeness of the person or animal companion.
How do I order a portrait?
Contact me so we can discuss what you would like--size, medium, etc. The next step is for me to look at the photos that you send me (either by mail or e-mail). Then we will come to a decision about the final details, such as background. For specific information on ordering a portrait, click here.
Do you contact me when the portrait is complete?
When the portrait is completed, I will e-mail you. If you would like to see a digital image before I ship it, please let me know. Once the final payment is made your portrait will be shipped to you.
What mediums do you use?
The mediums I use are watercolors, pencil, charcoal or oil.
What type of materials do you use?
I only use archival (museum quality) materials to ensure your portrait's longevity, so it can be treasured from one generation to the next.
How long will my portrait take?
Pencil portraits take about two weeks. Watercolors take about three weeks, and oils take two months. Oil takes longer because of the long drying time. Turnaround time also depends on current works in progress, and if there is a waiting list. When we initially discuss your portrait, I can give you a time frame. If a special date is approaching quickly (such as a birthday), I offer Gift Certificates.
What will be the cost of my portrait?
The cost depends upon the size and medium, and the number of people or pets included in the portrait. Please see the price list.
How should I take care of my new portrait?
All pencil and watercolor portraits must be framed under glass. The glass should not touch the surface of the drawing or painting. Oils do not require mats or under glass treatment. See framing for more information.
Does the portrait come framed?
No, I do not frame. I recommend that you take your portrait to a quality framer. A good framer will have a sense of composition and can give you valuable suggestions on choosing your frame. The framer will know how to enhance your portrait and bring out the colors, and tonal variation. A professional framer has the knowledge and access to a wide range of moldings to get the best frame for you. The framer will also recommend the best type of glass to use. Glass that blocks out ultraviolet rays is desired, because sunlight can cause fading of pigments. A properly framed painting or drawing will protect and enhance its beauty.
I would like a size that is not listed on your price list. Can I do that?
Yes, absolutely.
Will I get my photographs back?
All of your photographs will be returned safely.
What type of photos of my pet should I send?
Please remember when taking photos of your pet that the quality and focus of the photo will affect the outcome of the painting. A few good quality photos, including one or two close ups of your pet’s face are needed. A photo that captures a playful moment is good; one that shows what he/she loves to do is really helpful. A photo that shows an accurate coloring of your pet is needed. Send as many as you like.
I want a portrait of my children. What type of photo of my children should I send?
A professionally taken photo is best. I can also work from home taken photos. Look through your current photos and pick out several that are clear, and that you like. If you don’t have recent photos, you can shoot the photos yourself. Take several different views of the face. If you are printing the photos out on your printer, enlarge the photos to fit an 8.5” by 11” sheet of paper. I have found that most people can take a good digital photo and enlarge it for a printout that works very well.
How do I send my photos to you?
Photos can be mailed through the post office, or sent as an email attachment.
How do you ship?
The portrait is placed inside archival wrapping paper or an archival art bag. Then the portrait is placed into a padded box to ensure a safe delivery to your door. Shipping is by UPS. I will give you the tracking number so you can track your portrait from the UPS website.
Ok, this is a lot of information. Now where do I start?
Contact me by e-mail, and tell me what you want. If you are unsure of some details, we can discuss it.
What if I need to cancel my order?
If you wish to cancel, please inform me as soon as possible. There will be a cancellation fee of 5% of the total order.
Full Guarantee.
I offer a 100% money back guarantee on every portrait if you are not happy with it.
